A happy client tags you in a post.
Another leaves an amazing review in your DMs.And you think:
“This would be perfect on my sales page or a reel!”
And yes — testimonials and UGC are powerful marketing tools.
But they’re also legally tricky if not handled correctly.
Here’s how to use them legally, ethically, and strategically.
What is UGC (User Generated Content)?
Any content someone voluntarily creates about your brand:
● Social media posts mentioning you
● Videos using your products or courses
● Positive comments or reviews in WhatsApp or email
● Written or video testimonials
● Before-and-after stories
Using UGC without permission might seem harmless — but it’s not.
What Happens If You Use UGC Without Permission?
● You could violate copyright or privacy laws
● Your client might get upset (and talk about it publicly)
● Platforms might penalize you
● You lose trust as a brand
● You could get a complaint — or a lawsuit
How to Legally Use Testimonials and UGC
● Always get permission (via DM, email, or form)
“Would you like us to share your testimonial on our site or social media? We’ll
gladly give you credit.”
● Use a written (or digital) consent form
“I authorize the use of my testimonial, name, and/or image for promotional
purposes by [your brand].”
● Don’t edit the content out of context
● Give credit when sharing UGC (tag or name them if they prefer)
● Protect personal data (blur or remove full names, emails, etc. without explicit
permission)
✅ What About Anonymous Testimonials?
You can use them only if all identifying info is removed and you have permission to use
part of the content.
Where to Legally Share Testimonials
● Your sales page
● “Results/Success Stories” page
● Social media posts (with permission)
● Email campaigns or webinars
● Internal presentations or media kits
✅ Legal UGC Use Checklist
✅ Did you get written or digital permission?
✅ Do you store those consents securely?
✅ Does the client know where and how their testimonial will be used?
✅ Did you keep the original message intact?
✅ Did you remove any personal data if it’s anonymous?
Sharing happy client posts?
Before you repost that glowing testimonial or tagged reel, make sure you’re doing it
legally.
