A beautiful PDF, a valuable guide, a free class packed with tips.You offer it for free—to help and attract the right audience.
But one day, you find someone sharing it on their Telegram channel.
Or worse—selling it on their website.
Now what?
Here’s how to legally protect your free resources (lead magnets) so no one else
profits off your work.
What is a freebie?
A freebie is a free resource you offer in exchange for something—usually an email
address.
Examples:
● Downloadable checklists
● E-books
● PDF guides
● Mini-trainings
● Free webinars
● Templates
Even if they’re free, they’re still your intellectual property.
What happens if you don’t protect it?
● Someone may copy it and claim it as their own
● They could edit and resell it without your permission
● They might use it in their course without credit
● Brands you don’t want to associate with might republish it
● And if you didn’t clearly state your rights… it’s harder to take action
How to legally protect your lead magnet
1. Add an intellectual property disclaimer
At the bottom of the doc or inside the video/class:
“This material is the property of [Your Brand]. Reproduction, sale, or
distribution without written permission is prohibited.”
2. Include your brand name, logo, and contact info
So it’s clear who created it.
3. Require email sign-up or form submission before sending
This gives you proof of who accessed it.
4. Mention it in your Terms of Use
Even free content should have usage guidelines clearly listed on your website.
5. Keep proof of creation and date
Use tools like Canva Pro, Google Docs, or email timestamps to show you made it.

✅ Does it include a legal notice saying it can’t be copied or sold?
✅ Is it covered in your website’s Terms of Use?
✅ Do you have timestamped proof of when you created it?
✅ Are people only accessing it after opting in?
What if someone already stole it?
● Gather evidence
● Reach out professionally
● Send a Cease and Desist letter
● Report them to the platform (Instagram, Etsy, Telegram, etc.)
● Consider copyright registration if it’s core to your brand
Giving away a freebie doesn’t mean giving away your rights.
